Dniprovsko Orilskyi Nature Reserve

Dnipropetrovsk region

About reserve

This is unexpected wild nature lodged between two industrial giants – Dnipro and Kamianske cities. Quiet murmur of reed and ancient black poplars, songs of warblers and thrush nightingales, the shadow of a sea eagle soaring in the middle of the limitless blue sky, a cautious look of a roe deer, badger trails – this is a perfect place for exploring and listening to nature.

The reserve protects a unique preserved area of long-flooded forests in the middle reaches of the Dnipro River with their numerous straits, reed thickets and forest outliers. Floodplain lakes are decorated with the European white water lily (Nymphaea alba), water caltrop (Trapa natans) and floating fern (Salvinia natans).

Once such ecosystems used to be typical, but as a result of creation of the system of hydropower plants on the Dnipro River only small areas of the former rich floodplain remained unflooded.
