Donetsk region
You will be fascinated by chalk mountains which are considered to be a natural wonder of Ukraine. The white rocks even remember the ancient monks who founded a monastery in the caves. Nowadays, the shrine domes of Sviatohirsk Lavra of the Holy Dormition rise there.
On the white cliffs, there are rare plants preserved including Pinus cretacea which is listed in the Red Book of rare species of Ukraine. Relict pine has created a real highlight of the park – chalk pine woods. In total, there are 48 species of rare plants in the park. Tulipa quercetorum and Anacamptis palustris will also please your eyes.
The river’s floodplain and ravine forests are inhabited by Mustela erminea (the stoat), an extremely rare species for Eastern Ukraine. Also, it is possible to see Bubo bubo (the eagle-owl), a rare species in Europe, in the rocks of chalk mountains. The park has become a sweet home for 63 rare species of animals including Vipera nikolskii, Haliaeetus albicilla (the white-tailed eagle) and Lutra lutra.
