Polissia Nature Reserve

Zhytomyr region

About reserve

Polissia Nature Reserve is the land of forests and wetlands. The postglacial landscapes with impassable forests and sand ridges rising over swamps and river floodplains are preserved there.

The reserve protects the largest areas of lichen forests with dwarf mountain pines (Pinus mugo), vast areas of wild berry fields and heathlands, unique juniper forests. The earth is rich in gifts of nature – wild honey, blueberry, lingonberry, cranberry and mushrooms.
This diversity of wild delicacies is only for animals living among the wetlands and forests – giant elks, lynx, hares, birds and wolves.

If you are lucky enough, while strolling quietly along the educational trails of the reserve you will be able to encounter the roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), tawny owl (Strix aluco) which nests in an old hollowed out log, elk or wolf traces near the trail.
