Mezynskyi National Nature Park

Chernihiv region

About park

Luxurious landscapes of Sivershchyna nature, coupled with picturesque Desna expanses, strong and mighty giant oaks – with the oldest civilization centres (Mezynskyi Upper Paleolithic site), healing air infused with herbs, combined with crystal clear spring water – all these are the faerie story of Mezynskyi National Nature Park.

Deciduous forests in ravines and gullies provide home for a dozen species of ferns (Filicales) and seven species of Orchis. The leaves of the ostrich fern (Onoclea struthiopteris) can reach up to 2 metres in length, and the thickets of the rough horsetail (Equisétum hyemále) in the ravines take the traveller back to the times of the dinosaurs.

In spring and autumn, a huge number of birds migrate through the Desna valley. Here, you may see a grey heron (Ardea cinerea), a great bittern (Botaurus stellaris), a western marsh harrier (Circus aeruginosus). Deciduous forests are a home for the stoat (Mustela ermine), the European polecat (Mustela putorius), the swift footed roe deer (Capreólus capreólus). In June, stag beetles (Lucanus cervus) arrange knightly tournaments on age-old oaks, and colourful butterflies feast on floodplain Desna meadows in the diversity of grass and flowers.

The free waters of Desna are a home to 25 fish species. The rare Dnieper barbel (Barbus borysthenicus), Donets ruffe (Gymnocephalus acerinus), burbot (Lota lota), and sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus) are among them.

In addition to natural treasures, there are about 50 archaeological sites in the park. Among them, there is the world-famous Mezyn Paleolithic site, which is almost 20,000 years old. To immerse yourself in the history of the region, starting from the Paleolithic, you can visit the local museums.
